初稿

Have you ever seen the authentic items your great grand parents had used in Canada?  I didn’t see any of them.  Recently there is an exhibition on the life of centennial Taiwan~5/24,2009.  In order to see the antique things in person, I went to National Taiwan Museum in the northern part of the 228 Memorial Park in Taipei, where I haven’t visited for a year.

The exhibition shows the rooms of memories for the past 100 years.  They are displayed in four sections on the underground floor: Rooms of Great Grant Parents, Grand Parents, Parents and Sister.  The rooms are filled with nostalgic and modern things.

Ancient items, like a big radio, 3-inch embroidered shoes of great grandmother, a desktop dressing box, and paper currency valued one NT dollar(now it is a coin) can be seen in Rooms of Great Grand Parents and Grand Parents.  The exquisite shoes caught my attention.  I wondered how the females walked with such tiny shoes.

As for things in Rooms of Parents, like a Tatung Doll, a TV with wooden doors for screen, movie posters and a Hi-Fi stereo, I’ve used most of them.  For instance, there is a TV with wooden doors for screen still at my home.  Of course, we don’t use it anymore.  It reminded me of those days, when I watched TV with my sisters.  Qiong-iao’s romantic novels on the bookshelf were eye-catchers for me.  They were very popular 20 years ago and even were shot into many popular soap operas.  I recalled those days my mother and I watched them with laughs and tears.  In Room of Sister, the displayed modern things, like Easy Card, a cell phone, notebook and CDs, can also be seen in my bedroom.

Although I’ve never used half of the items here, their presence brought me back to the nostalgic years.  Next time I’ll think over the momories the thing had brought to me before I throw it away.

Stepping out of this exhibition hall, I went to the gorgeous lobby.  The sublime vaulted roof ceiling in the middle of the building is the visual focus.  Looking up, I saw stained glass windows glittering with sunlight, which created splendid atmosphere, which is the reason I like this museum.

Speaking of this museum, established in 1913, it is the oldest one in Taiwan, and one of the most beautiful public buildings in Taipei.  The European-style building is modeled after the Greek Doric-style architecture popular during the Renaissance.  With its witness Taiwan’s history, and records of natural and humanitarian developments, it was declared as a ‘National Heritage’ in 1998.  The abundant collections and researches in this elegant architecture are dedicated to Taiwan’s evolution with regard to the earth science, anthropology, zoology and botany.

Exhibitions are presented not only in the museum but also outside of it.  Two bronze buffalos in front of the majestic museum are the common memories of the people in Taipei.  Children especially like to sit on or stand by them to take memorable pictures.  As a result, the bronze buffalos are the most favored among outdoor exhibitions.  Two stem locomotives are also popular.  The Tengyung locomotive was the oldest and the Taiwan Railway No. 9 was in service during the Japanese occupation period.  There are other items shown here, such as stone utensils and tablets, relics of the Giant Stone Culture, cannons and so on.

After seeing these exhibitions, I sauntered in this pretty park.  About 6 months ago, this park was no longer encircled by iron fences; instead, by bushes and trees.  This change makes it more like a backyard of Taipei city residents.  Walking idly among the garden and Chinese pavilions sent my nuisances away temporarily.  Even if I had to use the toilet, its simple appearance and clean interior environment surprised me.  This toilet made of woods and concrete was decorated with plants and kept quite clean, which was rated as an excellent public toilet by Taipei City government.

This park is a good place not only for relaxation but also for performance, especially for the youngsters.  The stage is located on its west.  A few lines of wooden benches are in front of the stage.  I saw some teenagers were in rehearsal for a dance in the afternoon at that day.  I joined the ranks of the onlookers.  Their energetic performance was met with our unanimous applause.

By the way, the land scope of this tourist destination, the 228 Memorial Park and National Taiwan Museum, will be extended by the mid or end of this year once the completion of the interior renovation of the old Land Bank, opposite to the park.  The interior space of this old Land Bank is going to be mainly dedicated to the exhibitions on dinosaurs.  At that time, the museum will be renamed as National Taiwan Museum of Science History.  I know you’re interested in Taiwan’s nature and culture.  Next time you come to Taipei, don’t forget to pay a visit to this newly museum and the surrounding park!  I look forward to your visit and am glad to be your tour guide.

修改後的文稿

Have you ever seen the authentic items your great-grand parents used in Canada?  There was an exhibition for Taiwan’s recent centennial.  In order to see the antiques in person, I went to National Taiwan Museum in Taipei.  I hadn’t visited there for over a year.

The exhibition contained a room of memories from the past 100 years.  They were displayed in four sections on the basement: Room of Great Grant Parents; Room of Grand Parents; Room of Parents, and Room of Sisters.  The rooms were filled with both nostalgic and modern things.

When I stepped into Rooms of Great Grant Parents and Grand Parents, many ancient items caught my eyes.  There was a big radio, 3-inch embroidered shoes of  great grandmother, and a desktop dressing box.  I even saw paper currency valued one NT dollar (which is now a coin).  The exquisite shoes caught my attention.  I wondered what kind of posture women had back then.  They probably couldn’t walk like us.

As for things in Room of Parents, it had items such as a Tatung Doll, a TV with wooden doors, movie posters and a Hi-Fi stereo.  I’ve used most of them.  For instance, there is still a TV with wooden doors in my home.  Of course, we don’t use it anymore.  It reminded me of those good old days, when I used to watch TV with my sisters.  Qiong-iao’s romantic novels on the bookshelf caught my eye.  They were very popular 20 years ago and even were turned into soap operas.  I recalled the days when my mother and I watched them with laughter and tears.  In Room of Sister, the modern things were displayed, such as an Easy Card, a cell phone, notebook and CDs.  I also use these kinds of things in my daily life.

Although I’ve never used half of the items in the different rooms, their presence brought me back in time.  Next time I’ll think over the memories that a thing has brought to me before I throw it away.

After stepping out of the exhibition hall, I went to the gorgeous lobby.  The sublime vaulted roof ceiling in the middle of the building was the visual focus.  Looking up, I saw a stained glass windows glittering with sunlight, which created a splendid atmosphere- which is the reason I like this museum.

Speaking of this museum, established in 1913, it is the oldest one in Taiwan, and one of the most beautiful public buildings in Taipei.  The European-style building is modeled after the Greek Doric-style architecture popular during the Renaissance.  It is a witness to Taiwan’s history, and records of natural and humanitarian developments, and it was declared a ‘National Heritage Site’ in 1998.  The abundant collections and research in this elegant building are dedicated to Taiwan’s evolution with regard to earth science, anthropology, zoology and botany.

By the way, the landscape of this tourist destination, the 228 Memorial Park and National Taiwan Museum, will be extended by the end of this year to the old Taiwan Land Bank.  Opposite to the park, Taiwan Land Bank, established in 1933, was a branch of a Japan bank during Japanese occupation.  It is European-style architecture.  As a result, it was declared a city heritage site in 1998.  The interior space of this old Land Bank is going to be mainly dedicated to the exhibitions on dinosaurs and the history of this bank.  At that time, this bank will be renamed as Taiwan Land Bank Exhibition Hall.  This building is currently under renovation.  I know you’re interested in Taiwan’s nature and culture.  Next time you come to Taipei, don’t forget to pay a visit to this newly improved museum and the surrounding park!  I look forward to your visit and would be glad to be your tour guide.
